Results of the Auction of Modern and Contemporary Art

13 June 2017

Milan, 14 June 2017 – Excellent result for this spring’s auction of Modern and Contemporary Art held at Il Ponte Casa d'Aste, in Milan, with a total of 5,640,000 € in sales and 90% of the lots sold. Numbers that confirm the steady growth of the Modern and Contemporary Art department and the unwaveringly warm reception that modern art finds with Italian and international clients.

Participation at the auction hall was very active, especially in the afternoon session, which reached “standing room only” in all three rooms set up to receive clients; as always, there was also telephone and online bidding from abroad, including the United States, Peru, Korea, Japan, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Russia.

The top lots included “Natura Morta”, 1961 by Giorgio Morandi, estimated at € 200,000-250,000 but sold at 562,500 €; Alighiero Boetti’s “Segno Disegno”, a 1983 work, estimated at 100,000-150,000 € and sold at 200,000 € and the important design by Christo, “Store Front Project”, from 1964, which was bid up to 243,750€ from an initial estimate of 100,000-150,000€

Great success was registered by the works on paper, which attracted important bids. Among these, a watercolor by Joan Mirò, “Senza Titolo”, dated 1963, estimated at 15,000-25,000 € and sold at 52,500 € and a work by Jean Dubuffet “Personnage dans un paysage”, from 1960, which sold at 80,000 € starting from an estimate of 30,000-40,000€

The sculptures were also well received; in particular, a bronze by Mino Rosso, “Rapporti di Forme” dated 1934, was estimated at 5,500-7,500 € and sold at 33,750 €, a record for the artist.

World record also for Irma Blank, an Italian artist of German origin, set with her “Radical Writings, Schrifzug=Atemzug”, oil on canvas, 1994, estimated at 40,000-60,000 € and sold at 100,000

Also, among the Italian artists of the 20th century, we cite Mario Sironi’s masterpiece, “Paesaggio urbano con ferroviere”, 1924, estimated at 60,000–80,000 € and gaveled to the highest bidder at 102,500 € and “Autoritratto”, by Achille Funi, 1921, which opened at the estimated 5,000-7,000 € but was bid up to a final price of 60,000 €.

The Director of the Department of Modern and Contemporary Art, Dr. Freddy Battino, commented:

"We are very pleased with the response of the collectors who flocked to participate in the auction, from all over Italy and above all from abroad. From the very latest experimentation to a "return to tradition", the quality of the works was recognized and rewarded by extraordinary results”.
