BADIA Y LEBLICH (1767-1818) - Travels of Ali Bey in Morocco, Tripoli, Cyprus, Egypt, Arabia, Syria, and Turkey, between the Years 1803 and 1807. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown, 1816. First edition in English, the first edition in French was published in Paris in 1814. The author was a Spanish traveller who disguised as an Arab gained access to many locations in Asia Minor and north Africa forbidden to Christians. 2 volumes, 4to (270 x 211mm). Engraved portrait, 3 (of 4) folding maps and 81 (of 86) plates of which 7 folding and including plates 13 and 28 bis and an unnumbered plate (lacking plates 66, 67, 69 and 78; some occasional staining, light crease and soiling, without half-titles and advertisement leaf, a tiny tear to first folding map); not having found a collation the pagination of our copy is: vol. I: [III-V], VI-XLII, 1-339; vol. II: [III-V], VIII-IV, [1], 1-373. Contemporary half calf, gilt titles on spine (some rubbing). Provenance: Sir Richard Poore? (bookplate) - T.
