Fine copy of the first editions of the major early papers of Lagrange, on the calculus of variations and mechanics. The 5 complete volumes of the Miscellanea Taurinensis have never been auctioned before and include some major texts by Lagrange, Euler, Cigna, Giovanni Battista Gaber, Michele Antonio Piazza, Haller, M. le Comte Saluce, Condorcet and others. 5 volumes, 4to (230 x 170mm). Half titles, engraved and woodcut vignettes and large engraved head-piece at beginning of text. Numerous engraved plates are bound at the end of each volume: vol. I 4 plates numbered premiere, 2-4; vol. II 7 plates, the first numbered 1-5, an engraved map and a botanical sheet with 4 plates; vol. III 7 plates numbered 1-3 and IV-VII; vol. IV 4 plates numbered 1-2, I and one unnumbered; vol. V 5 plates numbered I-IV and one unnumbered. The volumes contain numerous treatises among which are the renown Lagrange theories: Recherches sur la methode de maximis, et minimis, Sur l'integration d'une Aquation differentielle e differences finie, Recherches sur la nature, et la propagation du son, Lettre de M. Euler a M. de la Grange contenant des recherches sur la propagation des Abranlemens dans un milieu elastique, Nouvelles recherches sur la nature et la propagation du son, Essai d'une nouvelle methode pour determiner les maxima & les minima des formules integrales indefinies, Application de la methode precedente e la solution de differens probleames de dynamique (few small marginal repairs to final leaves of final volume, without loss, some other minor defect).
