OLINA, Giovanni Pietro (1585-1645) - Uccelliera : overo discorso della natura e proprieta di diversi uccelli. Rome: Angelo de Rossi, 1684. Second edition, the first printed in 1622, of this work on birds and bird-catching. Uccelliera is a discourse on the characteristics of the many birds to be found in Italy, giving instructions on their care and identifying their habits and songs. The work also contains an etching of an instrumental group, describing the playing techniques and make-up of ensembles. It includes depictions of a viola da braccio and a viola da gamba, as well as a harpsichordist, lutenist and other instrumentalists. John Evelyn, in his Elysium Brittanicum, illustrates an aviary that is very similar to the one illustrated in Olina's work on K1v. 4to (277 x 200mm). Engraved title, 66 engraved full-page illustrations by Tempesta and Villamena, large woodcut tail-pieces and initials (some staining, spotting and browning, repaired tears to D1 and K2, marginal tear to M1 and few other leaves). Contemporary vellum, manuscript title on spine, blue edges (some staining and chipping). Provenance: Basimanto Gragnani (ownership note on title) - erased ownership inscription on title.
