[SERIMAN, Zaccaria] - Viaggi di Enrico Wanton alle terre incognite australi, ed ai regni delle scimmie, e de' cinocefali. Nuovamente tradotti da un manoscritto Inglese. Berne [? Venezia]: 1764. Fine Italian translation of Seriman’s account of the imaginary voyages of the very un-English-sounding English narrator, Enrico Wanton. Shipwrecked on the shores of a South Land, Wanton finds a society of civilised and cultured apes. Coming into favour with them, he is soon appointed a minister of state and begins a course of excessive revelry and indulgence, which is depicted in the delightful plates that “show Seriman’s Australia to be very much like a Renaissance Planet of the Apes” (Moors). 4 volumes, 8vo (161 x 116mm). Engraved portrait, 32 plates and engraved map. Contemporary marbled calf, gilt spines and red edges (some wormholes and light rubbing). Provenance: paper labels describing the books on front panels.
