ERODOTO (484-430 a.C.) - Hīrodotou logoi ennea, oiper epikalountai Mousai. Herodoti libri nouem quibus musarum indita sunt nomina. Venice: Aldo Manuzio, 1502. Editio princeps of Herodotus's history of the Persian Wars, issued by Aldus in the same year as his editio princeps of Thucydides, using the same paper stocks and typeface. Aldus's text is considered superior to Valla's Latin translation of 1474 because he had access to different manuscripts (he edited this work himself), and in his preface he states the validity of Herodotus as an historical source, despite its reputation as a text full of lies and errors. Folio (303 x 201mm). Aldine device on title and at end (some light spotting, title with two tiny repairs without loss if not minimal, some soiling to first leaves, second leaf with small paperflaw causing loss of a few letters). 19th-century fine russia, gilt fillets on panels and spine, edges eleganlty marbled (weak joints). The lot is accompanied by a export license.
