RIPA, Cesare (1560?-1622) - Iconologia del cavaliere Cesare Ripa perugino. Perugia: Piergiovanni Costantini, 1764-67. A richly illustrated edition of Ripa's iconology, the best repertoir of allegorical images and personifications of abstract concepts. The first edition was printed without illustrations in 1593. 5 volumes, 4to (261 x 182mm). Titles with engraved allegorical vignettes, portrait of the abbot Cesare Ripa and Cesare Orlandi, numerous engraved vignettes by Sforza Perini, engraved head-pieces and initials, woodcut endpieces (some light browning and spotting, vol. V with small marginal tear to bottom corner of title and small marginal wormhole at end). Contemporary vellum, gilt spine, the first 4 volumes uniformly bound with blue edges, vol. V in similar binding with some unopened leaves (some light staining). (5)
