First edition of Rousseau's study of social inequality and injustice. The first issue with the author’s middle name incorrectly spelled “Jaques" on title and at the end of the dedication, engraved frontispiece signed and titled 'chez' (and not "ches"). 8vo (210 x 132mm). Title printed in red and black with engraved vignette by S. Fokke, engraved frontispiece by D. Sornique after Eisen with caption "Il retourne chez ses Egaux", engraved vignette at beginning of text (some light spotting, title loose). Collation: *8(-*8) 2*-4*/8 5*/8(-5*6,7,8) A4(-A4) B-Q8 R8(R6+X1) S2(-S2). Contemporary marbled calf, gilt spine, red edges (extremities lightly rubbed and chipped).
