BIOT, Jean Baptiste (1774-1862) - Recherches sur les réfractions extraordinaires qui ont lieu près de l'horizon. Paris: Garnery, 1810. One of the fundamental studies on refraction conducted by Jean Baptiste Biot with explanatory engraved plates. Biot made numerous contributions to the scientific community most notably in optics, magnetism, and astronomy. The Biot–Savart law in magnetism is named after Biot and his colleague Félix Savart for their work which showed a connection between electricity and magnetism by "starting with a long vertical wire and a magnetic needle some horizontal distance apart [and showing] that running a current through the wire caused the needle to move" (Parsley). 4to (268 x 210mm). Half-title, woodcut vignette on title, 9 engraved folding plates at end (some foxing). Original wrappers, title on paper label on spine (some creases and light wear).
