A curious copy of the first edition in which the owner added a manuscript catalogue of the plants inserted on with handwritten notes before each plate. a good impression of the large folding map of the environs of Paris. 'Sebastien Vaillant is honored in France as the man who first understood the nature of sex in plants. He was a student of Tournefort's and considerably influenced Linnaeus' (Hunt). Folio (399 x 249mm). Half title, title printed in red and black with engraved vignette, engraved portrait by Houbraken, folding engraved map of the archdiocese of Paris and 33 engraved plates of plants and plant details by J. Wandelaar after Claude Aubriet (some browning and spotting, few minor repairs to verso of folding map). Contemporary Dutch vellum decorated in blind (front joint weak, some staining).
