ZATTA, Antonio (attivo 1757-97) - Atlante Novissimo. Venice: 1779.   A fine copy of one of the finest and most comprehensive world atlased printed in Italy in 18th-century, complete of its 215 maps in fine contemporary colouring. Zatta’s Atlas was designed to accompany the Nuova Geografia, an Italian translation of the geographical treatise of A. F. Busching. The maps include Mitchell’s map of America on 12 sheets, a suite of European maps, county maps of Kent, Middlesex, Essex and Surrey, and various maps of Africa, Asia, Australasia, and of the Ancient world. Those of Australasia follow Cook’s latest discoveries. Good conditions and good impressions of the maps   4 volumes, folio (378 x 268mm). Vol. 1: Double-page frontespiece dated 1779 (lacking engraved frontispiece dated 1775); 4 pp. dedication with engraved arms of the dedicatee Carlo Spinola, engraved initial and tailpiece; Indice dei capi e paragrafi; distribuzione della materia e delle carte; sopra le carte geografiche of 4pp., p. )(IX)( with Tavola delle longitudini e latidutini a cui seguono )(X)(-)(XVI)(, (1-2), 3-50. The double-page maps are 70. Vol. 2: engraved frontespiece, a text leaf with Distribuzione delle carte geografiche, 49 maps. Vol. 3: engraved frontespiece, a text leaf with Distribuzione delle carte geografiche, 54 maps. Vol. 4: engraved frontespiece, a text leaf with Distribuzione delle carte geografiche (some manuscripts annotations and corrections), 42 maps. 215 maps in total (occasional light spotting). Contemporary calf, panelled spine with double title labels in yellow and dark brown (in 3 volumes) and in red and dark brown (in vol. 3), gilt floral decorations, different colours marbled endpapers, red edges (extremities lightly rubbed).
