Paris: Josse Badius, 1519. Second edition of Valerio Flacco's Argonautica which was published for the first time in 1517. This edition is accompanied by a more extensive commentary and contains various contents to the preface. There are elaborate large-format woodcut illustrations at the beginning of each book that tell the story of the epic poem. Blumenthal describes the Parisian printer as "the first star in the constellation of 16th-century printers" (Art of the Printed Book 1455-1955, p. 14). Folio (310 x 195mm). Title within elaborate woodcut border with Jean Petit's printer's device (Variant B), large-format woodcut illustrations and elegant woodcut initials, text also printed in Greek (a little browned, C8 with repair with small loss in the lower margin, last two leaves with some repairs without major losses). Modern calf, title on paper label on spine, marbled paper slipcase. Provenance: some early annotations.
