To meet the requirements of the growing demand of collectors of works on paper, in 2018 the auction house opened the Old Master Drawings and Engravings department which closed its first season with the brilliant turnover of about one million euros.
Sketches, preparatory drawings, elaborate works made in pen and ink, pencil, chalk, watercolor and other techniques that investigate the most intimate, personal and instinctive side of the creative impetus of the great masters, are the subject of a careful selection by the specialists in order to offer enthusiasts the best that comes to market.
Among the best results in this department: the work of Gabriel Jacques de Saint Aubin The Wedding of Merope and Polyphontes sold for € 275,000.
Other important awards were a 16th-century Prague School Venus, Bacchus and Ceres (sold € 47,500), Morazzone's Martyrdom of Saint Orsola (sold € 31,250), View of Villa Doria in Albano Laziale by Felice Giani (€ 10,625), a collection of sets for theatrical performances, created in the 18th and 19th centuries, including a Grand Palace Atrium designed by Ferdinando Galli Bibiena (€ 50,000), A collection of 104 drawings of lace and embroidery sold for € 31,250 well represents the eclecticism of this branch of the market.
The department aims to offer the names of great Italian masters, among the many already present in the catalogue: Giacomo Cavedone, Giulio Cesare Procaccini, Lo Stradano, Giovanni Battista Fogginiand Il Baciccio.
