A large pair of hexagonal porcelain vases, decorated with peacocks and pheasants among peonies and peach branches, on wood bases. China, second half of 19th c. (h. 66 cm.) The symbolism of these vases is of good auspice and may refer to the good wishes to grow socially in the ranks of civil officials of the Qing dynasty. The pheasant represents the second rank and the peacock the third. cfr: Terese Tse Bartholomew, Hidden Meanings in Chinese Art, Asian Art Museum San Francisco, 2006, pag.122 (5.25.2)
