Paris: Thierry, 1684-1685.   A fine work dedicated to the art of fortification and siege strategies enriched by numerous illustrations depicting, in addition to plans of fortresses and military movements, views of European cities and castles. The author was a sergeant major in the army of Louis XIV and inspector of the fortifications before becoming master of mathematics and geometry at Versailles.   3 volumes , 8vo (200 x 128mm). Engraved title in each volume, 2 portraits, more than 300 plates in text, engraved headpieces (lightly browned, slight sporadic spotting, tear at the lower corner of 2a3 in the third volume that does not touch the text). Second half of the 19th-century binding with gilt title on spine label (spine of the second volume damaged, light wear). (3)
