GIOVIO, Paolo (1483-1552) - Elogia virorum bellica virtute illustrium. Basel: tipografia Perna, 1575-77.   First edition of the first part of the work with the renown woodcuts by Tobias Stimmer. The artist was sent to Como by the publisher to copy the portraits in the Giovio museum. "The first comprehensive and generally accessible source for the likeness of persons in whom the contemporary learned public was interested" (Jakob Burckhardt).   Folio (298 x 205mm). Title within large woodcut border, portrait of the author on the verso of the second leaf, numerous woodcuts and portraits, woodcut initials (very tiny wormtrack on title touching one letter, light spotting and occasional light staining, faint browning towards the end, without final blank). 17th-century blindstamped calf (rebacked, some scuffing); preserved in a modern brown cloth case. Provenance: Georgius Biloen (ownership inscription) - M. Fran. Cant. Kellenb. (ownership inscription) - LS (pink stamp).
