PISTOFILO, Bonaventura (1470-1533) - Il torneo. Bologna: Ferrone, 1627 [ma al colophon 1626].   First edition of this richly illustrated book of weapon drills, principally the spear and pole-axe, for knights and infantry. It includes a few leaves with musical notation for the drum -- a very early instance of military music in print.   4to (231 x 165mm). Engraved title, portrait frontispiece, and 117 full-page engraved illustrations by J.-B. Coriolano, the engravings at pp. 353 and 357 have been pasted over other engravings (foxing and occasional light browning, lacking the preliminary leaves with "Origine del Teatro di Pallade", title with small paper flaw and some creasing to outer margin slightly affecting plate, the creasing at outer margins continues on the following 3 leaves). Contemporary vellum, manuscript title on spine (some chipping, small losses and staining). Provenance: Cannibary? e ventimiglia (ownership inscription on title) - shelfmark label on endpaper).
