DANTE ALIGHIERI (1265-1321) - La Divina Commedia ridotta a miglior lezione dagli Accademici della Crusca. Florence: Domenico Manzani, 1595. First edition of the "Commedia" edited by the Florentine Accademia della Crusca. It was the first critical edition aimed at improving the Aldine vulgate of 1502 and for more than two centuries it remained a fundamental reference for subsequent reprints. 8vo (150 x 104mm). Printer's device on title and at the end both at the colophon and the penultimate leaf, engraved plate folded at the top margin, woodcut initials and headpieces at the beginning of each Cantica, gathering G with the final two leaves cut out as per the instructions in the colophon, with final blank (lower edge of the first leaves frayed, some dampstaining, foxing and occasional tiny marginal wormtracks, engraved plate a little damaged at the edge with a little text loss). Contemporary vellum, manuscript title on spine (minor wear). Provenance: Nicolay Dominici Boery (contemporary ownership inscription on the verso of the final printed leaf) - some early annotations to the first and final flyleaves with drawings of flowers - Antonio di Rapallo (? early ownership inscription partially erased on title).
