VIGNY, Alfred de (1797-1863) - Cinq-Mars, ou une conjuration sous Louis XIII. Paris: Urbain Canel, 1826.   A fine copy in a binding signed by Lortic and in perfect condition. First edition of what is considered to be the first French historical novel. Little appreciated by historians just after publication, it was acclaimed above all by writers; Victor Hugo considered it "admirable". The work was born from Vigny's adolescent historical readings and from his admiration for Walter Scott, the novel later had considerable success, as evidenced by the many reprints including the third, the following year (1827), printed by Balzac.   2 volumes, 8vo (213 x 129mm).
