DE BÉTHUNE, Maximilien Duc de Sully (1559-1641) - Mémoires de Maximilien de Béthune duc de Sully. London: [s.e.], 1747.   "Exemplaire ou grand papier". An elegant edition of this work enriched by numerous excellent plates, rarely present in other copies registered at auction (RBH), which portray nobles and royals of the time printed by Odieuvre, and by two folding plates, representing the massacre of the night of San Bartholomew and the assassination of Henry IV. De Béthune was finance minister of King Henry IV of France, and his work is one of the most important French historical sources of the time.   3 volumes, 4to (290 x 210mm). Engraved frontispiece in first volume, half titles, titles in red and black with engraved vignettes, author's portrait and 73 engraved plates, 2 of them folding, engraved headpieces and initials (little marginal tear at T4 of the first volume, occasional light spotting). Contemporary mottled calf with triple gilt fillet on covers, gilt decorations and title on labels on spine, gilt dentelle and edges, marbled endpapers (light wear).
