DANTE ALIGHIERI (1265-1321) - Comedia con l'espositione di Christophoro Landino. Venice: Lucantonio Giunta, 1529.   The first edition of the Comedy that contains the portrait of Dante. The text is based on that of the Aldine edition of 1502, but it is accompanied by Landino's commentary which ws printed for the first time in 1481. The iconographic apparatus is based on the Venetian Capcasa edition of 1491 of which several of the woodblocks were recovered from the printer's shop. The portrait is by an anonymous Venetian master and it was previously made in smaller format and printed in the "Amoroso convito" published in Venice in 1521. The illustration portraying Dante for the first time is responsible for the idea of the poet's physiognomy for contemporaries and future generations.   Folio (305 x 211mm). Title printed in red and black, inserted in the same frame as the Works by Virgil printed in 1522, but with the series of Italian poets in place of the Latin ones in the right column, at the bottom the Florentine lily printed in red, on the verso the portrait of Dante, on the verso of BB6 the same woodcut border of the title page with the Latin poets in place of the Italian and the replacement of the Florentine lily with the motto ''Sustine et abstine", 96 woodcut illustrations, with final blank (light restoration to the outer margin of the first leaf, light occasional staining or foxing). Ancient vellum, manuscript title on spine, red speckled edges.
