BOURGERY, Jean Baptiste Marc (1797-1849) - Traite complet de l'anatomie de l'homme comprenant la medecin operatoire. Avec planches lithographiees d'apres nature par N.H. Jacob. Paris: Delaunay, 1831-54. "One of the most beautifully illustrated anatomical and surgical treatises ever published in any language" (Heirs of Hippocrates). An extraordinary work to wich Bourgery dedicated 23 years, illustrated with Nicolas Henri Jacob's (1782-1871) detailed lithgraphic plates. The first 5 vols cover descriptive anatomy; vols VI and VII cover chirurgical anatomy and the final volume focuses on general and philosophical anatomy. "It represents one of the most remarkable works in the whole history of anatomy, and in any case it is the most outstanding to be published in the 19th century" (Le Minor and Sick). 16 tomes in 15 volumes , folio (415 x 305mm). Figurative frontiespiece, 7 lithographic titles, 798 plates (including multiple plates), some folding (some spotting). Contemporary blue half calf, spines decorated in gilt (some rubbing). (15)
