CAMPO, Antonio (ca. 1525-1587) - Cremona fedelissima citta, et nobilissima colonia de Romani. Cremona: Ippolito Tromba e Ercoliano Bartoli, 1585. A wide-margined copy with a very good impression of the first edition of this important and richly illustrated story about Cremona. Brunet I, 1526: "Original edition et fort rare d’un ouvrage estimé"; Cicognara 3977; Choix Olschki IV, 4257: "All the figures ont été bien gravées par Agostino Carracci d’après les dessins de Campo. Edition fort bien imprimée, rare et recherchée". Folio (402 x 265mm). Allegorical title (with retouched date where it reads 1583) with portrait of Philip II on the reverse in a medallion without cap and 55 small shields with the arms of the states belonging to the Spanish crown, allegory of Cremona on the verso of the second leaf, portrait of Antonio Campo, figure with the Carroccio coming out of the Cremona gate, 9 portraits of bishops or other illustrious personalities, 24 oval portraits of the dukes and duchesses of Milan with the portrait of Philip II with cap on p.112, plates depicting the Baptistery and its plan, the external shape of the Cremona Cathedral, the tower and its plan, the plan of Cremona folded several times and dated 1582, the map of the Contado and Diocese of Cremona, all engraved by Agostino Carracci, text within woodcut border, fine letterpress, woodcut initials and headpieces, with blank 10*4 (small wormtrack at the upper margin of the first leaf, occasional light browning). 18th-century vellum, title in gilt on spine and later in manuscript, marbled edes (minimal defects); preserved in an elegant modern box.
