Breitling, Navitimer Ref. 806 steel wristwatch Year 1966 Manual-wind movement Black dial with indexes Case n. 1086748 Cal. 7736 Diam. mm 41 Born in 1952, the Breitling Navitimer quickly became the go-to watch for pilots thanks to its circular slide rule that allowed them to perform navigation calculations in flight. Anecdote has it that it was initially designed for the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), with their logo appearing on the dial. In the 1960s, astronaut Scott Carpenter asked Breitling for a version with a 24-hour dial to distinguish day from night in space, giving rise to the Breitling Cosmonaute, worn during the Mercury-Atlas 7 mission in 1962. The Navitimer became an icon, worn by legendary pilots and even celebrities such as Miles Davis, a testament to its appeal that transcended the world of aviation.
