Frantisek Kupka ( OPOCNO 1871 - PUTEAUX 1957 )

KUPKA, Frantisek (1871-1957) - Quatre histoires de blanc et noir. Paris: Marcel Baque, 1926.   Copy n. 110 of 300 complete of the 26 full page woodcuts and in excellent condition. It is an important illustrated work by the Czech artist Františeck (Frank) Kupka, one of the founders of abstract art. In 1894 Kupka moved to Paris and worked as a graphic designer for books and posters. He was influenced by both the Fauves and the Futurists and from 1910 onwards his work became more and more abstract. His interest in colour and movement brought him closer to Orphism and with the Section d'Or Cubists, and in 1931 he was a founding member of Abstraction-Création.   Folio (335 x 254mm). 26 woodcuts including title and others numbered 2-26. Editorial wrappers printed in black on the front cover and spine (slightly darkened and lacking editorial folder and case).
