16th century manufacturing. Tapestry fragment depicting the Death of Ananias, taken from a cartoon by Raffaello Sanzio (1483-1520) (cm 348x282) (defects, losses and old restorations)   Provenance: Private collection, Varese   In late 1514 and early 1515, Pope Leo X commissioned Raphael to create preparatory cartoons for a series of tapestries intended for the Sistine Chapel. These cartoons were sent to Brussels and woven in the workshop of Pieter van Aelst. By 1519, seven of the ten tapestries arrived in Rome and were exhibited on 26 December of the same year, on the occasion of the solemnity of Saint Stephen; the Death of Ananias arrived a few months later. The tapestry presented here is probably part of this same series.
