From the model by Benvenuto Cellini, "Perseus with the Head of Medusa", sculpture in green serpentine, alabaster base adorned with caprons amid foliated volutes and mascarons; four Greek deities in marble set in niches alternated with relief busts of caryatids on a square marble base (total h. cm 245) (defects, breaks, and restorations)   The sculpture, originally executed by Cellini between 1545-1554, represents Perseus, son of Zeus and Danae, at the moment of triumph after decapitating Medusa. The hero treads upon the lifeless body of the Gorgon while lifting her severed head with his left hand.
