BARETTI, Giuseppe (detto SCANNABUE, Aristarco) (1719-1789) - La Frusta Letteraria. ROVERETO [MA VENICE]: Ottobre 1763 - Luglio 1765.   First edition, scarce to find complete on the market, of this work published in 33 issues, of which 25 published in Rovereto (but actually by Zatta in Venice) and the final 8 in Ancona. La Frusta Letteraria, conceiving the literary essay as a journalistic article accessible to a large public, has undoubtedly contributed to building a new modern prose in the field of literary criticism in Italy. Under the pseudonym of Aristarco Scannabue, Giuseppe Baretti stands in opposition to the empty academy, to the dull and frivolous poetry, proposing a sincere criticism, independent and with pre-romantic aesthetic perspectives. The aggressiveness of the judgments caused him numerous problems of censorship which prevented him from printing the final 8 volumes in Venice and led him to imprint them in Ancona.   3 parts in one volume, 4to (254 x 175mm). Later vellum, elegant labels with titles on spines, uncut (some light spotting and staining). Provenance: Comm. A. Padula (armorial bookplate and ownership inscription); P. P. Tosi (ownership inscription); Luigi Razzolini (ownership inscription).
